No iPod for Karzai

Hamid Karzai; From Maryland Restaurateur to 21st Century Caligula

President Obama gives cheesy gifts to foreign dignitaries.

An iPod for the Queen of England – - who already has one.

A set of DVDs for Prime Minister Gordon Brown – - a gift, The Guardian called, “about as exciting as a pair of socks.”

But Mr. Obama is infinitely more generous to Muslim leaders.

To display his deep appreciation to the Afghan President for keeping his country under the rule of the strictest interpretation of Islamic law – - an interpretation that demands death to any Muslim who converts to Christianity and starvation for any woman who fails to submit to the sexual whims of her husband – - President Obama has presented Hamid Karzai, one of the world’s most corrupt leaders, with the gift of three state of the art helicopters that bear price tags of $500 million.

The gifts was purchased without competitive bid or congressional approval from Air Transport Europe (ATE), a Slovak company best known as an ambulance service.

They represent a same token of friendship between two world leaders who can recite the Exordium and Shahadah in flawless Arabic.

Wood paneling, leather executive chairs, wall-to-wall carpeting, and two flat-panel TV monitors attached to a DVD player are a few of the amenities contained within the helicopters. While the flying machines are equipped with AN/AAR-60 Missile Launch Detection Systems, they do not contain protection against missile attacks.

The full list of extras in each VIP helo is as follows:

Main VIP cabin

Two leather high-back executive chairs with seat belts.

1 each leather sofa with seating for 4 people (seat belts included)

2 end tables

1 center table

2 17 inch flat panel TV monitors

1 eDVD player (connected to both monitors)

1 sound system (connected to DVD player & monitors)

1 refrigerator

Set of shelves for storing glasses/plates, etc.

Carpeting

Wood paneling

Wood paneled door dividing the forward seating area

1 toilet

Forward Seating Area (behind cockpit but in front of VIP area)

5 leather, high backed passenger seats with seat belts

1 fire extinguisher

Carpeting .

Several years ago, the Bush Administration presented Mr. Karzai with a similar gift – - a present of three Russian Mi-17 helicopters.

These copters were purchased – - again without competitive bid – - by the U.S. Army’s Threat Systems Management Office from a Slovak ambulance company at a cost of $6 million.

The Mi-17s were painted a bright green color that led to insider jokes about the Taliban writing the requirements.

Worse, the copters were so overloaded with extras that they could barely lift off the ground. Mr. Karzai was upset. They were sent back to the U.S. for overhaul. American tax-payers have graciously picked up the tab.
