32 Cents Worth of Confetti Making
I'm a little late getting started here today because I spent the
morning at my favorite firing range. One of my rifles needed some
exercise, so we worked out together. At first glance it
![]() may look like the infamous "Evil Black Rifle" that liberals wet their pants about. Nope, this is a "sheep in wolf's clothing", this is the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22. It fires .22 LR cartridges, the magazine holds 25. I took off the iron sights and put on a red-dot scope, and added a forward assist handle because my left shoulder is bunged up. It has Picatinny rails on all 4 sides of the barrel for attaching stuff, but you really don't need a tactical thermometer and a tactical toothbrush if your original goal was a lightweight and useful firearm. I fired 4 magazines, 100 rounds, this morning and had just one round that misfed and was damaged, had to be cleared and discarded. All the rest sent a bullet 25 yards down range and punched a hole as close to the center of the target as my shaky old hands would permit. If the target had been a cantaloupe, all of the shots would have hit it. Maybe I should post a warning sign on my front lawn warning hostile cantaloupes that their lives are at risk if they screw with me.
Wondering about the title of this page? I'm a "member" at the range, members get free lane use during slow weekday time, I brought my own ammo and eye and ear protection with me, and I only used a couple of paper targets. So a couple of hours of awesome precision shooting enjoyment cost me all of $0.32. (Yeah, I know I've already paid for all those other costs, but I get a "military discount" on my membership, I buy ammo in bulk on the internet when it's on sale, and shooting .22 LR costs about .03 per round as opposed to .223 at about .40 per round in a real "Evil Black Rifle".) Remember, I'm part Scottish, laddie.
