Can Assassinations Turn the Tide in Afghanistan?
![]() This week's issue of Time asks that question in an article by Robert Baer. It speaks of giving up the "hammer", the traditional military role of blunt force instrument, in favor of the "scalpel" the Predator drone delivering a single bomb or missile into the lap of a Taliban "command node". This is known in civilian-speak as assassination of enemy leaders. A similar operation called the "Phoenix program" was extremely effective in Vietnam against the Viet Cong Infrastructure leaders. It was so effective that it attracted all kinds of congressional attention and opposition. As you may have learned by now, if congress is against something, that strong evidence in favor of the thing. The only possible blowback from this program is if the Taliban takes it as a green light to start assassinating American political leaders, and how can that be bad? This is a win-win situation for all of us. Launch those drones!
