UN: 1 million more displaced by Pakistan floods
| The new flooding came after the Taliban issued a veiled threat
against foreign aid workers helping out in the crisis, a development
likely to complicate the massive relief effort. More than 8 million
people are in need of emergency assistance across the country. The United Nations, the Pakistani army and a host of other local and international relief groups have been rushing aid workers, medicine, food and water to the affected regions, but are unable to reach many people. The Pakistani Taliban on Thursday hinted they might attack the
foreign aid workers. The militant network has a history of attacking
aid groups, including agencies under the U.N. umbrella. U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said the U.N. remained committed to helping the flood victims. Other aid organizations noted that Pakistan has long been a high-risk environment for foreigners, and said their security plans took such concerns into account. * * * * * Not many people know that in 1967 I left the seminary after 4 years of studying to become a Catholic priest, and began a 26 year career in the U.S.Air Force, where I hoped to become a fighter pilot. I had come to the personal conclusion that saving people was extremely difficult and most people were not worth the effort, perhaps my aptitudes favored killing people who required it. Subsequently, I served two 12-month tours in the Vietnam War. During my second trip, ironically, I was in a Special Operations unit that supported the "Jolly Green Giant" rescue helicopters. I saw brave men do everything, including giving their own lives, to save shot-down airmen from the enemy. I ate lunch and drank beer with guys who had been awarded the Air Force Cross (2nd highest medal) for pulling people out of hot spots in North Vietnam. Hell, even I got a little medal for helping out on all those rescues. That changed my perspective for a lot of years, but now I'm a grumpy old man. Our own country is self-destructing, under seige by foreign enemies and riddled with internal enemies. It appears that the entire federal government, from our POS president down to the guy that delivers my mail, every one of them are corrupt, overpaid, incompetent, socialist criminals. So now we have Pakistan all flooded and we feel sorry for the poor buggers because they're fellow human beings and our DNA or our soul or something says we should help them. - But they don't want our help because we're unclean infidel Christians. The Taliban says they're going to kill any aid workers they see over there, and shoot down the U.S. and UN helicopters that are delivering food and picking up stranded refugees. President bozo likes to talk about "learning opportunities" - this could be an excellent lesson for Pakistan. To be sure they understand the significance, it should be properly communicated to them. I'm sure there are few radios and little or no electricity available right now in Pakistan, but a sky-writer airplane could do it, in arabic script, high in the sky:
