(CNSNews.com) – U.S. taxpayers are spending at least $18.6 million per day to house an estimated 300,000 to 450,000 illegal immigrants who are incarcerated and eligible for deportation from the United States, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The cost per day for these prisoners is based on Justice Department incarceration cost estimates from 2001 and on the lower-end figure of 300,000 incarcerated deportable aliens, which means the actual expense today could be substantially higher than $18.6 million per day.

The prisones involved here are foreign national who have come into the United States, committed a crime, been captured, and imprisoned.

Half of the undocumented aliens who were removed from the United States in fiscal 2010 (which ended on Sept. 30) had been convicted of a crime in the United States.

The words I bolded in the paragraphs above were to emphasize that as the full article later states, The $18.6 million figure comes from a 2001 estimate of $62 per day average to house a federal prisoner, multiplied by 300,000 illegal alien prisoners. We all know that inflation and the cost of living has gone up significantly since 2001, and if you multiply that higher price by the 450,000 upper limit of estimated illegal alien prisoners, you're talking about what? Maybe $80 per day time 450,000 = $36 million per DAY.

I noticed that one of the commenters on the original article at CNS News suggested sending the illegal alien prisoners (and our own prisoners too) and sending them to a desolate island somewhere. The British used Australia for that purpose, the French used to send their hard cases to Devil's Island or whatever.

There probably aren't a lot of uninhabited, desolate islands lying around these days, but there are quite a few shithole countries. How about if we clean out all our prisons and send the buggers to Afghanistan and Pakistan. (That would be AFTER we pull all of our GIs out of the two countries.)

We would still have some expense, like keeping several E-8 Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft airborne to watch the border for attempted escapes, but after the first few convicts are rendered into hamburger by Apaches or Warthogs, the rest of the population should learn to sit back and enjoy the opium harvest or something.  

It's a win - win solution.
