Teesside man dies after downing pint of vodka

Richard Davies, 29, from Thornaby, near Stockton, had been drinking with friends before the alcohol knocked him unconscious in January.

Mr Davies was found not breathing in a pool of his own blood, and died hours later.

Recording a verdict of misadventure, Teesside coroner Tony Eastwood said the alcohol in his system had killed him.

The hearing on Tuesday at Teesside Coroner's Court was told how the electrician's mate was five-and-a-half times the legal drink-drive limit and his body contained traces of the then-legal high mephedrone, which has since been banned.

However, Mr Eastwood said the alcohol in his system had killed him and that the mephedrone was not a contributing factor.

Coroner confirms mephedrone death

A 19-year-old man died from mephedrone poisoning, a coroner has confirmed.

Samuel Anthony Thompson, of Hanan Drive, Lurgan, died in Craigavon Area Hospital on 25 September 2009.

An inquest into his death heard that on the evening of his death his friends had seen him take an unknown quantity of mephedrone mixed in a drink.

Mr Thompson is the first person in Northern Ireland confirmed to have died from taking the drug and the third in the UK.

His friends told the inquest that as the evening progressed, Mr Thompson had become more and more agitated.

He collapsed shortly before 2300 BST. He was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital where, despite resuscitation attempts, he died.

Coroner Brian Sherrard conducted the inquest on 11 August in Craigavon.

In April 2010, mephedrone was banned and reclassified as an illegal Group B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Prior to that mephedrone was sold in shops as plant food as was seen as a way to get a legal high.

The drug has been linked to the deaths of a number of young people, although not definitively established as the cause of death in all cases.

I thought Karl Marx said "Religion is the opiate of the proletariat." So why do these young Brits need booze and plant food to deaden their brains when they've got glorious socialism?

Just think what it's going to be like when obammy gets done with his fundamental transformation of the U.S. - Right now the hardware store locks up the spray paint so you can't steal it and sniff it, and you can't buy ammonium nitrate fertilizer without a note from your mommy so that you don't use it to blow up a government building. Now you won't be able to buy Miracle-Grow for your petunias because the FDA won't want you mixing it with Old Everclear and chugging it.

Maybe that's what the war in Afghanistan is about - the federal government wants to vertically integrate the opium - heroin supply, processing, distribution, sales line. There's a lot of money to be made there, and the customers would be very compliant, much easier to control. The Department of Defense could provide muscle for eliminating competitors. Sweet deal. Plenty of friends with experience in the business...

Crap! Now that I've figured it out, who do I tell? The attorney general?
