| I just learned of the existence of American Crossroads this
morning in a
Wall Street Journal Article: If at first you don't succeed,
get some friends in high places to shut your opponents up. That's
the latest Washington power play, as Democrats and liberals attack
the Chamber of Commerce and independent spending groups in an
attempt to stop businesses from participating in politics.
Since the Supreme Court's January decision in Citizens United v. FEC,
Democrats in Congress have been trying to pass legislation to repeal
the First Amendment for business, though not for unions. Having
failed on that score, they're now turning to legal and political
threats. Funny how all of this outrage never surfaced when the likes
of Peter Lewis of Progressive insurance and George Soros helped to
make Democrats financially dominant in 2006 and 2008.
Chairman Max Baucus of the powerful Senate Finance Committee got the
threats going last month when he asked Internal Revenue Service
Commissioner Douglas Shulman to investigate if certain tax exempt
501(c) groups had violated the law by engaging in too much political
campaign activity. Lest there be any confusion about his targets,
the Montana Democrat flagged articles focused on GOP-leaning groups,
including Americans for Job Security and American Crossroads.
Article continues if you care...
Well, using the IRS threat to shut
down Americans' First Amendment Rights was a challenge I was not
willing to overlook. I looked up American Crossroads, read their
mission statement, joined up, made a donation and sent a form letter
to someone who might be interested in their work.
Mission
American Crossroads is a new kind of non-profit political
organization dedicated to renewing America’s commitment to
individual liberty, limited government, free enterprise and a strong
national defense—through informed and effective political action by
citizens like you.
In 2010, America faces much more than a choice among various
candidates for public office. We face a Crossroads – a fundamental
decision about the future direction of our country that will impact
America’s strength and character for years to come.
We face a decision between two starkly different visions of America:
one where the human creativity and initiative that are unleashed by
liberty and free enterprise generate the economic growth this nation
needs – and one where an increasingly powerful, all-controlling
federal government decides how to allocate the economic spoils.
We face a decision between holding our government to a higher
standard of financial integrity and accountability – and allowing
the government to keep spending our tax dollars wastefully,
concealing the true costs of legislation it passes, and accumulating
reckless levels of debt to foreign nations.
We face a decision between protecting America’s national security
with clear and resolute policies backed up by investing in our
defense capabilities – and an approach to national security that is
based on wishful thinking, ambivalence toward our allies, and
accommodation toward our most hostile adversaries.
The mission of American Crossroads is to help crystallize the debate
over these two diametrically opposed visions for America’s future,
to educate voters on how these contrasting visions will shape
America’s future, and to empower citizens like you to hold lawmakers
and office-seekers accountable for where they stand.
Form Letter
Everyone I talk to seems to share our concern that the government
in Washington is out of control and has to be held accountable. The
great American principles of individual liberty, limited government,
free enterprise and strong national security all seem to be at
greater risk every day.
I recently became aware of American Crossroads – a new, independent
organization that intends to put the brakes on Washington’s reckless
deficit spending and intrusion into every area of private life.
I think you would enjoy being part of American Crossroads because
it’s a no-nonsense, hard-driving group that’s 100% focused on
political advocacy to stop the Obama/Reid/Pelosi power monopoly and
make our voices heard in this year’s elections.
Check it out at
www.AmericanCrossroads.org and let’s get off the sidelines in
this election.
It’ll be fun, and definitely worthwhile!
