Explosion kills 18 Revolutionary Guards

EIGHTEEN Revolutionary Guards have been killed in a fire at an ammunitions store at one of the elite force's bases in western Iran, the state IRNA news agency has reported.

"Eighteen members of the forces at the base were killed and 14 wounded" in Tuesday's explosion, IRNA quoted Guards commander Yadollah Bouali as saying.

Two days of mourning have been declared in Lorestan province after the blast at the Imam Ali base near the provincial capital Khorramabad, IRNA said.

Mr Bouali said on Tuesday that the explosion hit when a fire spread to the munitions store at the base.

The Revolutionary Guards have emerged as a powerful military and economic force in Iran in recent years, especially under the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The force was set up after the Islamic revolution of 1979 to defend the revolution against internal and external threats.

The Guards were heavily involved in the government's crackdown on opposition protests that erupted after last's year disputed presidential election results which gave Ahmadinejad a second term.

U.S. President Baraq Hussein Obuma expressed his condolences to the Iranian government and offered to send officials of the American Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to examine the circumstances of the accidental explosion and assist in corrective actions.

That wasn't just any old base and
it wasn't small arms ammo that blew up

People who get paid to put together fragments of data and produce INFORMATION have determined that the blast the other day was at the highly secure and secretive underground Imam Ali Base. This base has had at least 15 Shahab-3 medium range ballistic missiles and mobile launch vehicles for them.

An accident can pretty much be ruled out as the cause of the blast because of all the safeguards and features protecting the missiles. An act of sabotage is almost certain. Their are probably only two nations that have the capability to carry out the feat, and one of them right now lacks the leadership cojones.
